Leadership & Team Building

I have been lucky enough to be selected for multiple leadership programs in my career, including the Green Start Academy and the Toro Assistant Experience. These programs focus on team building, networking and leadership skills, and I am a better manager thanks to my participation. I believe in giving back more to the community than what I receive. I am a volunteer for the GCSANE Assistants Committee, Golf Course Management Magazine editorial committee and my local dog park.

As a leader in the workplace, I value a family atmosphere with the crew. We spend 60+ hours a week together in season, so having fun is just as important as getting the job done.

I believe that the best way to be successful is to have a strong team around you.  Golf course maintenance is difficult work, so finding team members who enjoy the grind of a long season is important. Assistant Superintendents and foremen who have differing backgrounds and strong work ethics help keep the golf course running smoothly. Mechanics who have a genuine love for tinkering and being outside are also a great plus. Overall, I strive to build a workplace that is fun, easygoing, and efficient. My management style might differ from what you are used to, but I have found I can get more out of employees this way.

Agronomy

Throughout my whole career, I have been involved with championship level golf courses in New England. Healthy, high quality turfgrass is the backbone of a successful golf course. I prefer a hands-on approach when it comes to maintenance practices, working with assistants and the crew to ensure the property is always at its best.

I strive to provide the best possible playing conditions daily without sacrificing plant health. Consistency is key, from greens speeds to bunker firmness and sand levels.  I believe that newly developing technologies will be the key to the future success of any golf course maintenance operation, from using weather modeling to predict disease pressure to making more efficient chemical applications using GPS spray technology. These technologies help save time, money and unnecessary applications.

Relations

I am always available for conversation at any point in the day, as answering questions is my favorite part of this job. Turfgrass is what I have devoted my life to studying, so opening the door to the hows and whys of the job is very rewarding. I have always had an open and honest relationship with the membership, committee members, and all levels of management, using their feedback and comments to continue making the course better.
